Gbomo Gbomo EXPRESS

JUMIA ANNIVERSARY

“she sharp but she no tear cloth”

Ha! That was a classic line for me in this movie. This movie needs a standing ovation for being 95% Pidgin and having accurate subtitles (yas!). I really liked that and as for the story, beautiful. If I were to sum up the movie, it would be:

Gbomo Gbomo Express tells the story of five people: three idiots, a schemer and the mark. The mark isn’t even aware of their status as the mark throughout the film and the schemer plays the perfect mark up until the very end when you realise the true nature of the schemer. The idiots on the other hand were unique. They were used throughout the film and their greed and jealousy was the end of them. To be really honest, jealousy, lust and love was the reason for their downfall.

Now, that’s all I am willing to say so as not to spoil it for you. However, if you happen to be watching the film whilst reading this post, I bet you would have figured it all out with my help.

The movie was great, the cinematography, subtitles, script, acting, comic timing and soundtrack. However, the continuous showing of Lagos’ scenery was quite unnecessary and an overkill. Also the sound wasn’t the best. We could barely hear them as they spoke. Also the marketing of this movie was its greatest downfall. For a movie that is a this good, it should have been promoted so much so that the only thing people would think of once they stepped into a cinema would have been “Gbomo Gbomo Express”.

The best actor for this entire production was Gideon Okeke. He was amazing, he was able to present that ‘tout/agbero’ behaviour very well. He also had a wonderful mixture of confusion, anger, desperation and passion all rolled up in one character. Ramsey may have been the prominent face to push this movie but Gideon was the “man of the match” so to speak thereby making Ramsey the weakest link to be honest. Ramsey spent more time perfecting his accent whilst talking to Osas‘ character than he did acting.

Gbenro was another person that surprised me. He was inarguably one of THE worst actors on Tinsel but in this movie he was good. To which I want to throw accolades to the director. To other Nollywood directors, this is how you direct a film. The test of a good director is how well the actors in his/her movie shine. How he/she is able to bring out the best in the actors to the point that even the worst actor can put up a pretty decent performance.

Would I recommend this movie? Oh HELL YES!
